One night you left. I still regret I did not bark to wake the sleeping house. I pressed my nose to the glass of the window as your taxi slipped away. I’m still waiting by that window for you to come home.

Oh, poor puppy! It’s true, though, I’m pretty sure dogs have two senses of space/time: here and now & gone forever. That’s why they’re so happy to see us when we come home.
I totally agree. I can leave for 5 minutes to get milk or a cup of coffee downstairs and Xena is all “HOLYSHIT I LOVE YOU SO MUCH THAT WAS ETERNAL LET ME SNIFF YOU AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE REAL!”
Your words made me feel guilty for leaving.

Just remember that you aren’t leaving forever. Dogs just think an afternoon is that long.

I always think about what goes on in dog’s heads when we’re gone, even if it’s for a little while.

Sad, but what a loyal best friend that dog is not to give them away as they left. Loved this!

Meanwhile, cats are all, “Eh, you’re back.” I’ve got a cat and a dog at home, and I can definitely tell the difference in their responses.

That’s a shame. My cats go nuts when I get home. And not just when they haven’t had enough food, either. 😉
